A passionate convert to Roman Catholicism, Rosecrans attended a daily morning mass, carried a rosary and cross into battle, and often engaged his staff in theological discussions that ran late into the night.  His troops called him "Old Rosy."  His victory at Stones River would leave Lincoln feeling forever indebted, despite the disaster to come later at Chickamauga.
